Already since the 70s, outdoor whirlpools are manufactured in America. Initially, these were simple molded shells, to which only a jet pump was connected, which had sucked the water and pressed it through the nozzles into the whirlpool. Today, hot tubs are equipped with blowers, circulation pumps, adjustable jet pumps, ozone systems, adjustable rotating jets, elaborate filtration systems, LED lighting, electronic control systems or waterfalls.

Most of these possible options have been on the market for about 20 years. Hot tubs are designed to last for about 10 to 15 years. However, regular maintenance of the hot tub water plays a crucial role regarding durability of the hot tub.

Some manufacturers even give a lifetime warranty on whirlpool shells. This is because individual parts that become defective can usually be replaced. For the insulating covers, we are talking about a holding period of between 3 and 5 years. The cushions must be replaced at most already after 1 to 2 years.

With the high-quality whirlpools, such as from the manufacturer "Hydropool",  it may well happen that the pumps often last longer than the whirlpool itself. Sometimes heaters fail, mostly calcification is the cause. Therefore, when buying a hot tub, it is very important to pay attention to the brand and the dealer. Because spare parts should be able to be bought later. These are to be ordered in each case with the dealer, who in turn receives the spare parts finally from the original manufacturer. The spare parts can not simply be obtained from another whirlpool manufacturer, because these are usually not suitable.

Caution is required especially with Chinese whirlpools. Often components without standardization are installed, which are no longer available at a later date.
