Measuring and correctly setting the pH value for whirlpools
Measuring and adjusting the pH level in a hot tub is important to ensure that the water remains clean and safe.
Here is a detailed guide:
1. Measure pH
- Purchase a pH test strip or digital pH meter specifically designed to measure pH in a hot tub.
- Dip the pH test strip into the hot tub water and hold it underwater for a few seconds.
- Remove the test strip and compare the color with the scale on the packaging or in the instructions for use of the pH test strip.
- With a digital pH meter, the value is shown on the display.
2. Ideal pH value
- The ideal pH for a hot tub is between 7.2 and 7.6, a range that is slightly alkaline and ensures that the water is comfortable and safe for the skin while optimizing the effectiveness of disinfectants such as chlorine or bromine.
- A pH value outside this range can cause skin and eye irritation and reduce the effectiveness of disinfectants, resulting in insufficient disinfection of the water.
3. Adjustment of the pH value
- To adjust the pH value, use pH regulating agents that have been specially developed for whirlpools. These are available in liquid or granular form.
- If the pH value is too low (acidic), add pH increasing agents such as sodium carbonate (pH-Plus) according to the instructions on the packaging.
- If the pH value is too high (alkaline), add pH reducer such as sodium bisulphite (pH-Minus) according to the instructions on the packaging.
- Allow the pH regulator to circulate for a few minutes by switching on the whirlpool pump.
- After the regulator has dispersed in the water, the pH value is measured again to ensure that it is within the ideal range.
4. Check regularly
- Check the pH of your hot tub regularly, ideally at least once a week or more frequently if the hot tub is heavily used.
- Adjust the pH level as necessary to ensure it remains within the recommended range.
Regularly checking and adjusting the pH level can ensure that the water in your hot tub remains clear, clean and safe for use.
